Tokarake is an I-Kiribati woman passionate about boosting sustainable development through trade and improving living standards. For almost a decade, Tokarake has supported the Kiribati Government through national and international trade and compliance matters, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives in the Line and Phoenix Islands.
As a Trade Officer for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Cooperatives, Tokarake represented Kiribati's interests in trade discussions with the European Union. Prior to taking up her Australia Award, she worked as a WASH Program Officer for the Ministry of Line and Phoenix Island Developments, supporting UNICEF to educate and improve living standards in rural communities.
An avid supporter of grass-roots initiatives to break barriers and drive societal change, Tokarake also founded the Kiritimati Island chapter of the Girl Guide Association and coordinated a fundraising drive to facilitate the membership of almost 700 women. She hopes to use her leadership skills and professional expertise to shift Kiribati’s trade deficit status by advocating the sustainable production of goods using scarce resources in communities where unemployment is high. Tokarake holds a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of the South Pacific.
