Online Event | 24 June: Drug Trafficking in the Pacific

On 24 June 2025 (from 12:00PM-2:00PM AEST), WLI hosted an online Learning & Networking event exploring Drug Trafficking in the Pacific. The event was hosted for Australia Awards scholars and alumni from the Pacific and their families, as well as development colleagues in our region.

About drug trafficiking in the Pacific

Drug trafficking in the Pacific Islands has become a significant security issue, driven by transnational crime syndicates and local gangs (UNODC, 2025). The region serves as a transit zone for drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin, with routes connecting major markets in Asia, the Americas and Australia. The impact on local communities includes increased crime rates, addiction, and social instability.

About this event

The panel discussion will explore the main challenges faced by law enforcement and communities in the Pacific and potential solutions. Panellists will share best practices and lessons learned from successful prevention and intervention programs. By bringing together experts from various fields, the panel aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue and foster collaboration among stakeholders.

The event featured a live expert panel diccussion, audience Q&A, and break-out group discussions to explore the topic in further depth.
